It all started with two

imperfect hearts.

This is a story about an unlikely friendship, unexpected blessings, and the impact of compassion. I hope as you read it, you are inspired to spread compassion in your own way. There’s never been a more crucial time to spread your light around. The world desperately needs it.

The heart story

In 2018, after a lifetime of living through a lens of performance, perfection, and proving my worth, I embarked on a transformational journey of embracing imperfection and living a life full of compassion and grace for myself and others. As I entered into this deep, heart work, I met our original “Heart-ist”, Gary, who was making beautiful, handmade, imperfect wooden hearts from scrap wood. Holding one of Gary’s imperfect hearts in my hand, I realized that this little heart represented exactly the message I was longing to spread. This small token was beautiful, unique, and imperfect, made from wood that most people would walk by or throw away. They were perfectly imperfect, in the same way that I believe all human beings are. I began giving them out as a tangible reminder that things don’t need to be perfect to have meaning. Little did I know the impact these small, imperfect hearts and the heart story would have on so many. In 2021, The Compassionate Collective was born. To date we have put over 8,000 hearts into the world, created several imperfect heart products, and provided Gary with a sustainable income.

The hearts represent something unique to each “heart-holder”, compassion, hope, grace, love, healing and more. This work has been the most authentic, beautiful and adventurous of my life. The story has been rich and deep, full of twists and turns. My heart has expanded as I’ve learned what true compassion is and that it requires action. It is not enough just to feel, we must do. As The Compassionate Collective and the heart story evolve, the mission remains the same; To spread a message of compassion, acceptance and the beauty of imperfection to all. Join us in our mission to change the world, one heart at a time.

In terms of the hearts, what is your favorite aspect of working with Sam?

I really believe in the message of being perfectly imperfect and I love being part of spreading it to others.

We hear you hand out your own hearts too, tell us how that makes you feel.

Everytime I give out a heart, I tell people it’s been prayed over and that I hope it brings them comfort. People are so touched and it makes me happy to be adding some positivity to their lives.

To date, we have sold over 10,000 hearts and expanded into other products.

Gary has had a sustainable income for over 5 years, lives in his own home, & finds purpose and value in the work that he does

We continue to be amazed at how these seemingly small imperfect wooden hearts continue to impact one human heart at a time.
